Unit 9 - Irregular Verbs in the Past Tenses
Lesson 9.1 - Imperfect Tense: Only Three Irregular Verbs
Exercises 9.1 Quiz 9.1
Topic:

There are only three irregular verbs in the Spanish imperfect tense. Learn them here.

Only Three Irregular Verbs

In the imperfect tense only three verbs are irregular, and we already covered one of them!

The three irregular verbs are ser, ir, and ver.

We saw the imperfect tense of ser back in Lesson 5.3, so if you need a review, see it there.

So let's look at the other two here:

Ir in the Imperfect

Subject
Ending
Verb Form
Subject
Ending
Verb Form
Yo
-ía
Play Audio
iba
Nosotros
-íamos
Play Audio
íbamos
-ías
Play Audio
ibas
Vosotros
-íais
Play Audio
ibais
Él/Ella
-ía
Play Audio
iba
Ellos
-ían
Play Audio
iban

Those endings look familiar, right? It is as if Ir were an -ar verb whose stem is just "i".

That makes it easy to remember these conjugations.

An example sentence: Los domingos íbamos al mercado. Play Audio meaning On Sundays we went to the market.

Ver in the Imperfect

veíamos
-ías

veías
Vosotros

veíais
Él/Ella

Ellos
-ían

veían

Again the irregularity here is not too extreme. The only difference is that stem is "ve" instead of just "v", which is too short to be much of a verb stem!

Other than that, all the normal -er endings for imperfect tense are used.

Even with only three verbs in this lesson, there are exercises if you want some practice.

The quiz is an abbreviated one, with only ten questions.
